First Game Proposal

Task 04: Game Design Document

Objective:

  • Come up with three unique game ideas
  • Construct a Game Design Document for each idea
  • Conduct relevant game research

Introduction:

Before diving into choosing the three games for research and inspiration, I revisited some of the games I’ve played since childhood. Being more inclined toward mobile gaming rather than PC games, I decided to analyze a few mobile games that left a lasting impression on me. These games shaped my gaming preferences and influenced my ideas for the upcoming project.

The requirement for this task is to develop a 2D platformer game. After revisiting these games, I narrowed my focus to three titles that not only inspired me creatively but also sparked excitement during various phases of my gaming journey.

The Three Chosen Games:

The games I selected for research and inspiration are:

  1. Mega Jump
  2. Osu!
  3. Super Mario

Below is my analysis and research on these three games, along with the rough ideas they inspired for my game development project:

Process

Thus begun the refining stage. I decided the primary idea i want to settle on is Idea 1 from my proposal, which is "Melody Quest" , a Musical Fantasy Game.

The world of Melodia has lost its life and color after the "Melody of the World" was stolen by a dark force called the Noise.

As Lyra, a young guardian, you must journey through magical lands, collecting scattered musical notes to restore harmony and defeat the creatures of Noise. Along the way, you'll face rhythm-based challenges and a final boss that seeks to silence the world forever.

Measurable:
  • Combo Chains
  • Note Collection
  • Damage Taken
  • Time Taken
  • 1. Levels:

    Tutorial Level:
    • Introduce the mechanics: Such as stepping on the right musical planes and avoiding wrong ones. Explain how each plane plays a note and the consequences of missing a plane.
    • No enemies in this level, allowing the player to practice timing.
    Level 1 - Chill Music:
    • Music Style: Slow, soothing tracks with minimal percussion. The music sets a relaxed pace, allowing players to focus on accuracy and rhythm.
    • Challenges: Simple platforming elements with easy timing. It will ease the player into the mechanics, giving them time to learn the rhythm.
    Level 2 - Lively Music:
    • Music Style: Upbeat, energetic music with a faster tempo. More variety in the rhythm and more planes to step on.
    • Challenges: Introduction of enemies and more complex patterns in the plane arrangement. Planes may move or change positions, requiring faster reactions.
    Level 3 - Fast-Paced Music & Boss Fight:
    • Music Style: Intense, fast-paced music to test the player’s mastery of the mechanics.
    • Boss Fight: A boss who hates music and tries to disrupt the melody by causing planes to disappear or speed up.
