Game Development : Week 02

Task 02: Developing Our Game Idea Using SCAMPER

For our second task in the Game Development course, we were tasked with creating a new game idea using the SCAMPER method: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to Another Use, Eliminate, and Reverse. This framework helped us break down the creative process into manageable steps, allowing us to innovate while working with familiar game concepts.

Game Concept Overview: Cooking Ninja

Our team’s game, Cooking Ninja, merges two popular games—Cooking Madness and Fruit Ninja—to create an exciting new experience. Players assume the role of a busy chef in a high-energy kitchen, where they must prepare customer orders by slicing ingredients mid-air in a Fruit Ninja-style gameplay. Each customer’s order is displayed, showing the required ingredients, and the player must quickly slice the right ingredients to prepare the dish before time runs out. Speed and accuracy are key to satisfying customers and keeping the kitchen running smoothly!

Applying the SCAMPER Method

Here’s how we applied the SCAMPER technique to develop and refine Cooking Ninja:

  • Substitute: We swapped traditional cooking processes for a more engaging slicing mechanic, inspired by Fruit Ninja, where players interact with ingredients mid-air instead of on a kitchen counter.

  • Combine: We combined the time-management elements from Cooking Madness with the fast-paced slicing action of Fruit Ninja, creating a game where players must manage multiple orders while quickly and accurately slicing ingredients.

  • Adapt: To increase the challenge, we adapted the order system to include time limits. Players must race against the clock to prepare meals, making the gameplay more intense and rewarding.

  • Modify: We modified the slicing mechanic to include combos and power-ups for slicing the correct ingredients consecutively or with precision, rewarding skilled players with bonuses and higher scores.

  • Put to Another Use: The slicing mechanic also doubles as a way to unlock special recipes or rare ingredients, introducing mini-games or bonus challenges for extra fun.

  • Eliminate: We eliminated the need for multi-step cooking by focusing only on ingredient collection, making the gameplay fast and streamlined for maximum enjoyment.

  • Reverse: We reversed the typical cooking game format by shifting the emphasis from cooking in a kitchen to ingredient slicing in the air, giving players a fresh perspective on food preparation.

Presentation and Slides

To showcase our game idea, we’ve created a presentation and slide deck that explains how we developed Cooking Ninja using the SCAMPER method. You can check out the presentation and download the slides below:

Conclusion

This exercise was a great way to explore new possibilities in game design. Using the SCAMPER method allowed us to merge two familiar game concepts and transform them into something fresh and exciting. Cooking Ninja blends action with strategy, offering a fun, fast-paced experience for players.
