For my first blog on critical analysis, I explored three games created by seniors from the Game Development course. Here are my thoughts and insights on each game:
1. Zapper Snapper by Hanif Rashid
Playing Zapper Snapper was an interesting experience, but I found the character's movement a bit too fast, making it difficult to control at times. This rapid movement could impact gameplay, especially for beginners or those who prefer a more balanced pace. However, the instructions provided at the beginning were clear, ensuring a smooth learning curve for players. One of the game’s strongest aspects is its visual design—the graphics were impressive, with vibrant environmental elements that enhanced the overall experience. The background music (BGM) and sound effects were also well-suited to the game, contributing to an immersive atmosphere.
2. Reaper Test by Sam Mun Hoe
Reaper Test had potential, but I believe the introduction could be more visually engaging. The game begins by presenting the story through text, which felt a bit static. Replacing or enhancing the text with visual storytelling could captivate players right from the start. Additionally, the teleportation feature would benefit from some sound effects to make the action feel more dynamic and satisfying. Another point for improvement is the jumping mechanic; while it functions, I think adding some sound effects and allowing the player to jump higher without relying on walls would enhance the game. Overall, the background music complemented the game’s dark and eerie environment, adding to its mood.
3. Misty Night by Tamara Audrey
Misty Night stood out to me for its simple yet striking environmental design. Unlike the previous games, its minimalistic approach allowed it to shine in terms of atmosphere. However, I found the background music slightly overwhelming, particularly due to the bass sound, which felt too loud for the setting. Other than that, the gameplay was smooth, with the character’s movement well-balanced—neither too fast nor too slow. The sound effects were also well-implemented, making the overall playing experience enjoyable.
In conclusion, all three games had their strengths and areas for improvement. The visual designs and soundscapes in each game demonstrated the creativity and technical skills of their developers.
