Game Prototype Submission:Echo

 Prototype Submission Blog for "Echo"

As I gear up for the prototype submission of Echo, I’ve made significant progress on the game, although there’s still plenty to refine and expand. Here’s a breakdown of what’s currently in place and what’s planned for the future:

Main Character: Lyra

  • Progress:
Lyra, the protagonist, has basic animations for movement and jumping. However, the attacking animation and death animation still need improvement to make them more fluid and impactful.

  • Next Steps:
Work on creating smoother animations for Lyra’s attacks and a visually compelling death sequence.

Enemies

  • Current State:

    • One enemy is fully designed and integrated into the game prototype.
    • The second enemy is still in the design phase and hasn’t been animated or added to the game yet.

  • Final Boss:
While the concept for the boss is done, the boss character and its animations still need to be implemented in the game.

User Interface (UI)

  • Progress:
The basic UI is functional, including:

    • Heart count (tracks health).
    • Notes count (collectibles needed to pass a level).
    • Enemy count (remaining enemies in the level).
  • Next Steps:

    • Create a UI page for menus and transitions (to be tackled after completing the levels).
    • Design the game logo.

Levels

  • Tutorial Level:
Fully designed and functional, serving as an introduction to the gameplay mechanics.

  • Level 1, 2, and Boss Level:

    • Environments and landscapes are partially completed but require refinement.
    • Some sections of the map are too small for Lyra to navigate smoothly and need resizing.

    • Transitions between levels (e.g., doors) have not yet been implemented.

Collectibles

  • Notes:
Fully functional as the core collectibles. Players must collect all the notes to progress to the next level.

  • Hearts:
Players can pick up hearts to regain health.

  • Planned Additions:

    • More variety in note designs to keep the visuals interesting.

Dialogue System

  • Current State:
Basic dialogues exist between Lyra and NPCs.

  • Next Steps:
Expand the dialogues to include richer interactions that tie into the storyline and enhance the narrative.

Sound Effects & Music

  • Current State:
No sound effects or background music have been added yet.

  • Planned Work:

    • Add sound effects for player actions (jumping, attacking, collecting notes and hearts).
    • Include background music for each level.
    • Introduce ambient sounds to enrich the environment (e.g., wind in the mountains or echoes in the forest).

Art Assets

  • What’s Done:

    • Environment background designs and floors are mostly completed.
    • Minor tweaks are needed to improve navigation and fit character proportions.
  • What’s Pending:

    • Second enemy design and animations.
    • Boss character animations.
    • More variety in note designs.
    • Door designs for level transitions.

Key Challenges to Address

  • Ensure the level transition works seamlessly, both visually and mechanically.
  • Complete the design for the UI page and ensure the game logo reflects the theme.
  • Implement Lyra’s attacking animations and ensure they interact correctly with enemies.
  • Integrate sound effects and background music to bring the game to life.

Current Assets

In the blog, I’ll showcase:

  • Lyra’s animations (movement, jump, and basic attack).
  • The first enemy design.
  • The environment backgrounds for all levels.
  • UI elements, such as the heart and note counters.

This prototype marks an exciting step forward for Echo. While there’s still a lot to refine, the foundations are solid, and I’m looking forward to polishing every aspect of the game in the coming weeks.
