As I embarked on my final assignment for The Golden Portal projection mapping project, I reflected on how best to execute my vision within the constraints of time and resources. Initially, my concept revolved heavily around animating the orangutan and tiger characters to bring the narrative to life. However, as I delved deeper into the project, I realized that achieving detailed character animations for these animals would be highly time-intensive and beyond my current skillset. Instead of dwelling on limitations, I decided to reframe the project through a more aesthetic lens, focusing on delivering a visually stunning and conceptually rich experience.
This shift in direction led me to explore TouchDesigner, a powerful and widely-used tool in the projection mapping industry. By leveraging this software, I could enhance the visual storytelling of The Golden Portal without relying heavily on character animations. Using TouchDesigner not only aligned with the aesthetic approach I envisioned but also provided an invaluable opportunity to learn a tool commonly used in real-world projection mapping projects. This decision felt like a step forward toward creating work that resonates with professional practices in the field.
To familiarize myself with TouchDesigner, I began my learning journey by diving into YouTube tutorials and online resources. These tutorials were instrumental in helping me understand the fundamentals of the software, from creating interactive effects to designing procedural animations. As I experimented with various tools and nodes within TouchDesigner, I discovered how to create effects that matched the environments and transitions central to my narrative. For instance, I developed dynamic visuals for the malfunctioning portal transitions and enhanced the atmospheric aesthetic of the parallel universes featured in the story.
TouchDesigner allowed me to push the boundaries of visual storytelling by enabling real-time, procedural effects. With its node-based workflow, I could create immersive environments like the swirling vortexes of the black hole world and the vibrant neon hues of the cyberpunk Kuala Lumpur cityscape. By layering effects and experimenting with parameters, I brought an abstract yet cohesive aesthetic to life, aligning perfectly with the narrative of the golden portal malfunctioning across worlds.
This process was not without challenges. Learning a new software while simultaneously developing content for a final assignment required patience and adaptability.
