Lighting Interactive Design - Assignment 01

Lighting Interactive Design - Assignment 1

In this module, we were tasked with creating a 1-1.5 minute projection mapping piece that will be showcased at Muzium Telekom as our final project. The theme given to us was "Pulse / Nadi," which immediately sparked my interest. I was excited about the concept and began brainstorming ideas as soon as I learned about it.

Our team started by brainstorming potential concepts. Initially, each team member had their own unique idea, leading to a mind map with four different branches. However, after a discussion, we decided to merge two ideas: the story of a whale and the heartbeat of a person before passing away.

Consultation 1 (10/2/2025)

During our consultation with our lecturer, Mr. Zeon Wong, we shared our idea of the whale and the heartbeat. Our lecturer liked the concept as it had a strong problem statement, aiming to make the audience feel that "the end is the start of something new." We received valuable feedback on refining our concept. Some of the key takeaways were:

  • Conduct more case studies on whales to better understand their symbolism.

  • Integrate whale sounds, as different sounds convey different meanings.

  • Study the life cycle of a whale to create a stronger narrative.

  • Experiment with underwater sound effects to enhance immersion.

  • Explore an interactive element where the audience could wear red or blue glasses to experience different visuals.

After receiving this feedback, we immediately held a meeting to decide on our case studies to make our concept more solid. Taking this feedback into account, we revised our slides by incorporating case studies from:

  • Pixar’s Coco – for its vibrant visuals and emotional storytelling.

  • Whale Wonders (้ฒธๅฅ‡็‰ฉ่ฏญ) Exhibition – for its approach to marine life representation.

We analyzed the key elements from these projects and extracted valuable lessons that could enhance our work. We also refined our slides to document what we learned and how we could apply those insights to our project proposal. After this, we started refining our slides and preparing for the next consultation.

Consultation 2 (17/2/2025)

This week, we had a consultation session with our lecturer regarding our case studies. Initially, our research lacked depth, as it mostly contained general ideas. We then presented our case studies, shared some visual ideas we gathered from online sources, and introduced our concept of making the objects in our story out of particles.

Feedback:

  • We didn’t receive much feedback apart from needing to refine our storyline.

After the consultation, we immediately started discussing how the storyboard should look and how long it should be. Our group member, Xinyee, started working on the audio after we finalized the storyline. I was assigned to create the initial sketch of 12 frames for Assignment 2. At the same time, we researched visual tones that could shape the look of our project. We also decided to structure the entire project using a projection mapping visual made up of particles.

Reflection

So far, this project has been both challenging and exciting. I have learned a lot about concept development, case study research, and animation techniques. One of my biggest takeaways is the importance of reference studies—looking at past successful projects has given us a much clearer direction. Understanding how to extract valuable elements from case studies and apply them to our own work has been an eye-opening experience. I look forward to further developing our project and refining our final presentation.
