Lighting Interactive Design - Assignment 2
This week, we were briefed on Assignment 2, which focuses on developing a projection mapping narrative, mood board, and storyboard. The objective of this assignment is to explore different design concepts and ensure that our projection mapping project is immersive, narratively engaging, and visually compelling.
After the briefing, we began developing our mood board to establish the aesthetic direction. We explored different lighting styles, color schemes, and artistic inspirations to ensure that our visuals effectively complement our storyline.
Consultation 3 (24/2/2025)
We started the week with a consultation session where we presented our initial storyboard and audio concept to our lecturer. Initially, we prepared two versions of our animation: one lasting 90 seconds and the other 150 seconds. Our concern was that the shorter version might feel rushed, but after discussing with Zeon (our lecturer), we decided to move forward with the 90-second version (with the possibility of slightly extending it) to maintain tight and engaging pacing.
Feedback:
Refine the storyboard sketches for better clarity.
-

Determine the narrative climax and decide whether the flashback should occur before or after the whale falls.
 -

Consider audience immersion by integrating interactive elements, such as a designated seating or viewing area.
 -

Simplify the audio by removing certain piano background sections that might distract from the visuals, ensuring a more emotionally focused experience.

After the consultation, each team member was assigned specific tasks to refine Assignment 2:
-

Xin Yee: Refining the sketches for each frame and working on the audio.
 -

Adeylen: Assisting with the slides and animation development.
 -

Yu Hong & I: Focusing on the animation and 3D aspects of the project.

Consultation 4 (2/3/2025)
For this consultation, we presented the refined version of Assignment 2, focusing on concept and narrative development. We showcased our final storyline to our lecturer.
Feedback:
Continue progressing with content creation.
With this feedback, we have officially moved into the content production phase, where our team has divided responsibilities accordingly. Yu Hong and I are each in charge of different frames, and I am starting with the whale fall scene first.
In the following days, I continued experimenting with TouchDesigner to explore ways to create the whale fall and whale explosion scenes. I also considered using it to enhance other parts of the storyline, such as generating sea creatures.
Reflection
This phase of the project has been both challenging and rewarding. We’ve learned the importance of a structured narrative, enhancing engagement through interactive elements, and the technical skills required for creating compelling projection mapping content. Moving forward, we will focus on refining our visual assets and synchronizing them with our final audio composition to ensure a seamless and immersive presentation.
