Lighting Interactive Design - Final Assignment

Lighting Interactive Design - Final Assignment

For this assignment, we were tasked with refining our projection mapping concepts into fully developed and detailed solutions. The goal was to showcase creative thinking through effective exploration, iteration, and communication of our design ideas. Additionally, we needed to demonstrate technical proficiency in digital graphical communication while ensuring our visuals and narrative aligned with our design intentions. The final submission required documentation of our design process, including sketches, artwork iterations, and key refinements leading to the final output.

This assignment was a group project, and individual marks were based on participation and peer evaluation. The final presentation took place at Muzium Telekom on 22 March 2025, while all files and links were due on 26 March 2025. The project carried a total weightage of 40%.

Fifth Consultation (10/3/2025)

This time, Mr. Shakir, co-founder of WeAreFilamen, joined the consultation session to provide technical advice and suggestions for our project. We presented our idea, progress, and key visuals, including the first version of the whale exploding into colorful neon visuals created in TouchDesigner and the pulse animation. We also showcased our audio to gather feedback.

Part that we show to both Mr Shakir and Mr Zeon:

Feedback:

  • Simplify our flashback scenes, reducing them from four to just one for a more focused narrative.

  • Mr. Shakir shared some technical tips to enhance our content creation.

  • We were advised to cancel or shorten the introductory scene where a spotlight shines on the bed.

  • Both Mr. Shakir and Mr. Zeon appreciated our audio design.

After the consultation, we had a short meeting to finalize the flashback sequence. We decided to retain two key flashback moments: one showing the baby whale swimming with its mother and another depicting the mature whale’s return. These moments effectively encapsulate the whale’s life journey. Following this decision, we continued working on the content as we approached the final two weeks.

For this week i also working on my scene for whale fall and i have an idea to put red spider lily around the whale during the whale fall process as it can represent death and also putting lotus in the meeting where the whale will fall onto the lotus instead of the ocean floor ,so i started to model out r spider lily and lotus using Blender.

After some discussion with the group ,we decided to remove the lotus.

Last Consultation (17/3/2025)

This was our final consultation, mainly for addressing any technical issues or last-minute advice from Mr. Shakir. My teammates and I presented our individual parts to receive feedback.

Feedback:

  • For my whale fall scene, where particles flow out of the whale’s body, Mr. Shakir suggested widening the dispersion as the whale sinks deeper.

  • He also recommended adding wave-like particles when the whale reaches the ocean floor.

  • Other teammates received individual feedback in a one-on-one format.

Following this session, we returned to refining our content, ensuring everything was finalized before the showcase.

After Monday,I focused on final tweaks to my flower animation and the rendering process. Each red spider lily was transformed into a particle object using a tutorial I found on YouTube. However, rendering proved challenging due to the high particle count, so we used school computers to assist with processing.

I also worked on rendering the white particle whale for the whale fall sequence. Given the complexity of the scene, leveraging school facilities was essential to ensure timely completion.

On Friday (the day before our presentation), we realized our original presentation slides  were too static. To improve engagement, we met in person and collaborated on a more dynamic and visually compelling slide deck.

Final Presentation and Showcase (22/3/2025)

On the final day, each of us presented our assigned sections. I was responsible for narrating the storyline. Initially, I had expected the presentation to occur after the showcase, but it was scheduled beforehand. To adapt, I summarized the four main chapters and their overall message rather than explaining each scene in detail. This adjustment helped keep our presentation within the five-minute limit while maintaining engagement.

My teammates did an outstanding job, enhancing the emotional depth of our presentation. Their delivery made our project more immersive and meaningful.

During the showcase session, we encountered technical issues in the first run, but quick adjustments by the technical team ensured a smooth presentation afterward. Seeing our artwork projected in a real-world space was a surreal and rewarding experience—it was the moment when all our hard work truly came to life.

Reflection

This assignment was both a challenging and rewarding experience that pushed me to grow in various aspects. Beyond refining our concept and animation skills, I gained hands-on knowledge of projection mapping techniques and the intricate setup required to bring our vision to life. Presenting Hertz at Muzium Telekom was a proud milestone for our team, marking the successful completion of our journey in Assignment 3.

One of the biggest lessons I learned throughout this project was the importance of clear and effective communication. A significant portion of the work I did in TouchDesigner and Blender ended up unused because it didn’t align with the project's aesthetics. This misalignment was due to miscommunication within the team, and it ultimately led to wasted time and effort. It made me realize that no matter how much effort we put into creating assets, if they do not fit the overall vision of the project, they won’t be utilized. Moving forward, I will focus more on ensuring that everyone is on the same page before diving deep into production.

Additionally, I gained valuable insights into the technical and logistical aspects of setting up a projection mapping project. Understanding how different elements come together—such as content creation, mapping, and equipment setup—gave me a clearer picture of how these projects function in a real-world setting. This knowledge will undoubtedly be useful for future projects, allowing me to approach similar tasks with better planning and efficiency. Overall, Hertz was a great learning experience that strengthened both my technical skills and teamwork abilities.
